Race Report - BMB Round 4

Round 4 of the British Minibike Championship took us to one of my favourite tracks, Three Sisters Race Circuit down in Wigan:

  • Track Direction - Clockwise

  • Number of Turns - 10

  • Full Circuit Distance - 1473m

Thursday - Test Day

Was quite a wet day so didn’t do all the sessions but was good to get a few in to sort the set up for the bike and get some data.

Friday

Format was Practice 1, Practice 2, Qualifying 1, Qualifying 2 for the FIM MiniGP 160 class and for the BMB 160/50 Cup we dropped a Practice session as we had a Sprint Race.

Qualifying - BMB 160/50 Cup

P2 out of 15 with lap time of 58.2

Qualifying - FIM MiniGP UK 160

P1 out of 14 with lap time of 57.512

Race 1 - BMB 160/50 Cup

Started P2

8 laps

Not a great start - I think I must’ve been sleeping. Hudson passed me into first corner but I got under him out of the corner and pushed on with Travis in front.

On the first lap Travis came out of 5th corner, he hit the kerb and tucked the front. Luckily I managed to avoid him and rider was ok. This put me into 1st and I started to pull a gap. I crossed the line in P1, with 5.9 second gap. Well done to Arnie on his P2 and Frankie on P3

Finished P1

Best lap time 57.889

Saturday

Format for the day was Warm Up, Race 1, Race 2 for the FIM MiniGP UK 160 class and Warm Up, Race 2, Race 3 for BMB 160/50 Cup

Race 1 - FIM MiniGP UK 160

10 laps

Started P1

I managed to get the hole shot and stay in first off the line with Wilson right behind me. He passed me on the first lap into the Pentith Climb. I managed to pass back on the 2nd corner after the start line. Wilson passed again at Pentith Climb on the 2nd lap. I stayed behind him throughout the race until the final lap where I managed to get a good drive out of Lunar Bend, into his slipstream and up the inside at Pentith Climb.

Wilson tried to pass up the inside of the final corner out of Lunar Bend and it was a run to the finish line. We both were neck and neck and when we passed the finish line we weren’t sure who had it but I got P1 with 0.015 seconds in it. Wilson P2 and Frankie P3.

Finished P1

Best lap time - 57.875

Race 2 - BMB 160/50 Cup

10 laps

Started P1

I got a good start off the line with Hudson in P2 and Arnie in P3. I started to pull an early lead and up to a 3.8 second gap by lap 3 with Arnie in P2. Unfortunately the race was red flagged at 3.5 laps in. My friend Max had an off (a bit of a sore one but he’s ok.)

The race was restarted for a full 10 laps. Again I got a good start, got my head down and started to pull a gap. Maintained the lead but let off a bit towards the end crossing the line in P1, 1.5 seconds ahead of Travis in P2 and Arnie in P3.

Finished P1

Best lap time 57.987

Race 2 - FIM MiniGP UK 160

Started P2

10 laps

Wilson got the hole shot in first corner with me closely behind and we started to pull a bit of an early gap with Frankie and Hudson battling for third. I remained behind Wilson throughout with some very close racing and a gap of 5.9 seconds to third. On the last lap I passed Wilson by getting another good drive out of Lunar Bend with a slipstream up Conrod Straight and passed up the inside into Pentith Climb. Coming down the hill we approached a back marker but both made it through fine. Was another battle to the finish with me crossing the line P1 and Wilson P2 with only 0.055 seconds in it and Frankie in P3.

Finished P1

Best lap time - 57.893

Race 3 - BMB 160/50 Cup

10 laps

Started P2

I got a great start round the outside of Travis and into P1. At Conrod Straight, Travis managed to pass me back. I kept catching Travis into the corners and I managed to pass a few times but then he got me back when we got onto the straights. Our back and forth battling allowed  Arnie and Hudson to gain on us and it was a tight race throughout. On the penultimate lap I managed to make another move on Travis at the Esses just as we were coming up on a back marker but Travis got me again on the straight. It was a fight to line with me and Arnie on the last lap with only 0.008 seconds between us. Well done Travis on the win and Arnie in P3.

Finished P2

Best lap time - 57.596

A great weekend overall with 4 x 1st places and 1 x 2nd place.  I’m still currently leading both championships.

We are off to Whilton Mill at the end of the month for a double header round which will see us compete in the last 2 rounds of the FIM MiniGP UK 160 championship but with 100 points up for grabs and only a 32 point lead it’s still all to play for.

The BMB 160/50 Cup has an extra round down at Red Lodge in September so even more points available until the end of the season.
