Race Report - British Supermoto Round 4

Updated: Jun 27

I haven’t competed in any of the British Supermoto Championship this year but as it was at my local track, East of Scotland Kart Club (ESKC), in Crail it was a great opportunity for some extra track time and the weather was looking fantastic 😎

Saturday - National Supermoto Championship

The track was run in reverse direction (Anti-Clockwise) with standard track layout.

Both of the dirt sections have been recently modified and the top dirt section has been massively extended which was great but completely new and I struggled to get to grips with it throughout the weekend.

Format for the day was Practice, Qualifying, Race 1, Race 2, Race 3.

SUPERMINI (Tar Only)

For Junior Supermini, I Qualified P2 out of 28 with a lap time of 45.431

After qualifying, I decided to change from the Junior Supermini class to the Adult Supermini as there were a lot of younger riders and it was a big grid so I thought it was best joining Blake in the adult class. We were both 3 seconds a lap faster than others. As I hadn’t done qualifying for this class it meant starting from the back of the grid but I like a challenge.

Race 1

15 laps

Started P10 and got up to 2nd by lap 4 and managed to hold it till the end. Blake was too far in front to catch and his lap times were almost identical to mine. Finished P2 out of 10 with my best lap time being 44.294

Race 2

11 laps

Started P2 and got into the lead early in the first lap coming into the horseshoe. I had Blake hot on my tail the whole way and he managed to pass me on the last lap when I got held up by a back marker. Finished P2 out of 9 with my best lap time being 44.049

Race 3

10 laps

Started P2 again and was trying to chase down Blake, I got into P1 but he quickly passed me back and I then braked too late and almost hit the back of him. I dropped back for a bit, then as I was pushing a lot with a wrecked back tyre, I was coming up to a back marker and accelerated too hard, the back end slid round and I went into the gravel. I managed to get back up and finished P4. Finished P4 out of 7 with my best lap time being 44.206

I had a broken foot peg after the crash and I didn’t have time to replace for Race 3 of Supermoto Class

Supermini Tar Only - Overall 🥈

Best Lap Time: 44.049

SUPERMOTO

Adult C Group - Qualified P2 out of 29 with a lap time of 1:22.884

Race 1

10 laps

Started P6 on the grid because the top 2 from C group moved up to B group. I got up to P2 and held it all the way, closed the leader down in last couple of laps and almost got him on the last lap but had to settle for P2 out of 24 with my best lap time being 1:20.798

Race 2

10 laps

As I was in the top 2 in C group for Race 1 this meant I was put up to the B group starting at the back of the grid.

As there are a lot more experienced riders on 250s and 450s I held back while they all went into the first corner before trying to make my way through. Unfortunately I crashed out in the dirt and by the time I got going again I was starting to be lapped. As I’m not in the championship I made the decision to pull in during lap 5 to avoid getting in anyone’s way and potentially messing up their race.

DNF with my best lap time being 1:22.444

The damage to the bike from the Supermini race meant I couldn’t do Race 3 of the Supermoto class.

Best Lap Time 1:20.798

Sunday - British Supermoto Championship

The track was run in Clockwise direction with both dirt sections included. Turn 2 was removed and the fast sweepy left put in. That’s one of the benefits of Crail, different layouts are available and the track can be run in both directions which keeps things interesting.

The plan was just to do the Supermoto Academy class until I realised I could also do the Mini Bike All Comers class which was tar only (definitely prefer tar to dirt)

Format for the day was Warm Up, Qualifying, Race 1, Race 2, Race 3

SUPERMOTO ACADEMY

Qualified P2 out of 24 with a lap time of 1:24.617

Race 1

9 laps

Started P2, Blake got the hole shot and as soon as he got to first dirt section he was on it and started to pull away (he’s mega in the dirt) he checked out and no one was catching him.

Unfortunately I came off about 3 laps in (the dirt is not my friend) Got bike going again and within a few laps I managed to pass Belle and get back to P3 then coming into the dirt section I passed Archie into P2. I got stopped by a back marker and Archie got pass back. When I then passed the back marker I hit a big rock and lost the front end so was down again and back into P4. With it being the last lap there was no chance of catching Belle and Archie so crossed the line in P4 out of 24 with my best lap time being 1:20.086

Race 2

9 laps

Started P4 but got confused with the change to remove the first direct section on first lap (thought it was just for warm up lap) When I realised my mistake I ran wide putting me back to P10. Had to work my way through the pack and got back up to P4 by lap 3. Just pipped Belle out of the first dirt section to get into P3 and then on the next lap managed to get the pass on Archie after turn 2. Held P2 to the line.

Finished 2nd out of 24 with my best lap time being 1:21.893

Race 3

9 laps

Started P2 and remembered to miss out the first dirt section this time lol. At the 2nd dirt section on first lap, Archie managed to make a pass on me but on next lap I got up the inside of him on the hairpin and took back P2 then started to pull a slight gap. Blake was in P1 and doing his thing, checked out again. A few laps in, I was yet again down in the dirt section (just not having much luck with it) back down to P4 with Archie and Belle making the pass on me while I got back going. On the last lap I got the pass back on Belle and started chasing down Archie. Managed to just make the pass on the final corner and take P2 over the line with 0.25 seconds in it. Finished P2 out of 25 with my best lap time being 1:20.35

Ended up joint on points overall with Archie but as I beat him in final race I took P2

Supermoto Academy - Overall 🥈

Best Lap Time - 1:20.086

MINI BIKE ALL COMERS (Non Championship) Tar Only

Qualified P1 out of 15 with a lap time of 43.998

Race 1

10 laps

Started P1 and stayed out in front for the full race length. Finished P1 out of 15 with my best lap time being 44.368

Race 2

10 laps

Started P1 and once again managed to stay out in front for the duration. Finished P1 out of 15 with my best lap time being 44.137

Race 3

10 laps

Started P1 but unfortunately I stalled on line meaning I was then down to last place. I got the bike going and started to chase down the rest of the riders. By the 2nd lap I was back up to P1 and held it to the end. Finished P1 out of 15 with my best lap time being 44.655

Mini Bikes - Overall 🥇

Best Lap Time - 43.998

Really struggled to get to grips with the dirt all weekend. It was dry and very dusty which added to the challenge. It’s definitely something I need to work on and start being able to clear jumps and gain some time in the off road sections to improve my lap times.

Great to have such big grids and a variety of classes to take part in. Awesome weekend all over and the fantastic weather just topped it off nicely 😎

Thank you to everyone that supports me and a special thanks to those who came to watch me at the weekend.

As always thanks to all of my sponsors.
