Race Report - Scottish Championship & KMSC 300s

Updated: Jun 10

I recently decided to make the move up to the Kawasaki Ninja 300s which I can race from age 12 with an SACU Clubman Road Race licence.

Tuesday

After completing the necessary paperwork, next up was my Rider Assessment on the Tuesday evening at Knockhill Racing Circuit. This involved both written and practical elements which I passed without any issues.

This meant I now had a clubman licence allowing me to race in the restricted class (28bhp) until I have 10 signatures on my licence, at which point I can get upgraded to a National licence.

I then joined in with the rider development session which included some practice starts. I found this extremely useful as it helped me get used to the new bike and the bigger track. The 300 is a lot bigger and heavier than the MiniGP bikes I’m used to.

Knockhill Racing Circuit

  • Track Direction - Clockwise

  • Track Length - 1.27miles

  • Number of Turns - 8

Friday

I took my bike to Sean at GSG Performance who changed the suspension and set up for me. This made a massive difference to the overall feel and handling of the bike.

I signed up for the testing session from 2pm to 6pm - which gave me some valuable additional track time ahead of racing (4 x 15 minute sessions). It was good to get to grips with the track and the bike. I then went to sign on and technical inspection to save time the next day. It was all so efficient and well organised.

Saturday

Format for the day was Warm Up, Qualifying, Race 1, Race 2

I felt I did really well for the first time racing the bike. There were only 3 restricted bikes in the class (28bhp) so I ended up with 2 x 1st places for that and overall against unrestricted 300s (40bhp) I managed 8th out of 14 and 9th out of 13. A great start to the weekend.

Sunday

Format was Warm Up, Race 1, Race 2

The track was wet in the morning and started to dry up by the first race although rain started again later on and not long after my second race it was like a monsoon.

2 x 1st places for restricted class and against unrestricted got a 7th out of 10 and 4th out of 8. Overall happy with that.

Best lap time over the weekend:

Dry - 1:01.48 (in qualifying)

Wet - 1:03.76 (in R2 on Sunday)

Thanks to everyone at Knockhill for the smooth running (was so well organised and made me feel relaxed) everyone was so helpful and the orange army are amazing - out in all weathers!
